It’s been over 10 years, but GTA V is still one of the most played games ever. It’s also the best-selling game of all time and still keeps selling like crazy. GTA V keeps the open-world sandbox vibe going strong, and it’s definitely the biggest, most detailed, and most immersive one yet. We’re back in Los Santos (which is kinda based on LA), a place we last saw in GTA: San Andreas, and now the whole state of San Andreas is open to explore. You’ve got the city, deserts, mountains, forests, beaches—everything’s there. The world feels alive with day-night cycles, weather changes, and random pedestrians and cars doing their own thing. Some NPCs might even be committing crimes or getting chased by the cops.
This time, instead of just one main character, you get to control three different protagonists whose stories all connect as you play. First, there’s Franklin, a street guy who’s trying to get out of the thug life. Then there’s Michael, a retired bank robber living the high life but stuck with a messed-up family. And last, there’s Trevor, a straight-up psycho who loves chaos and destruction. The three of them get up to all sorts of crazy stuff, and you can switch between them on the fly. The writing’s hilarious, and while the main story isn’t some award-winning masterpiece, it keeps you hooked with tons of twists. Heists play a huge role in the game, with lots of missions building up to big scores. It’s definitely more fun and lighthearted than GTA IV, and there are way more side quests and wild activities to do. And of course, the game is full of satire, making fun of society, capitalism, and the American Dream.
Graphically, GTA V took full advantage of the newer hardware back when it dropped, and even today it still looks awesome. The environments are way more detailed, the lighting and shadows are sick, and the character models look super realistic. Cars are more fun to drive, and the destruction physics are a lot better. The voice acting is top-notch, and the radio stations are packed with some of the best music from almost every genre. The talk shows are hilarious, too, with hosts like Laszlo and Maurice Chavez cracking jokes about real-world stuff.
But the real reason this game is still so popular? GTA: Online. You can jump into a huge open world with tons of other players, buy properties, cars, weapons, and even create your own chaos. You can race, do heists, and make tons of money. Rockstar’s been keeping it fresh with new updates, which is probably why we haven’t seen a new GTA game in so long—they’re making a killing with this one. That said, the PC version has a lot of hackers, and Rockstar doesn’t seem to do much to stop them, which kinda ruins the fun sometimes.
Overall, even though GTA V is getting old, it’s still one of the best open-world games ever made. The fun of doing heists with friends, and the heart-pounding moments trying to finish the Doomsday Heist, make it super addictive. There’s so much to do, and with GTA: Online always getting new stuff, this game will probably stay popular until GTA VI finally drops.
